Join this talk to understand what's real, and what's just hype when it comes to mortgages and AI, and what you can actually do today to take advantage of this exciting technology.

The Business of Brokering: How to Build, Scale, and Sell your Mortgage Business
What if the key to building a high-performing mortgage business wasn’t more hustle — but the freedom to step away?
In this powerful and deeply personal talk, award-winning entrepreneur and industry veteran Doug Adlam shares the pivotal moment he nearly walked away from his thriving brokerage — not because it wasn’t working, but because he wasn’t.
That turning point became the catalyst for everything that followed: building a saleable business that could run without him, co-founding one of Canada's top mortgage fintech companies, and creating the space to truly live his life.
Doug
takes you behind the scenes of building a business designed for both growth and freedom.
You’ll learn:
• Why every broker should plan their exit from day one (even if they never intend to leave)
•
The systems, tools, and mindsets that create long-term business value
• How intentional design can help you be present for the moments in life that truly matter most
This session isn’t just about business success —

He began his career scaling his family’s brokerage by 40X before serving as Director of Strategic Growth for a
national brokerage, where he helped quadruple operations in just two and a half years and drive billions in annual originations. Doug has led teams recognized with three Canadian Mortgage Awards—including Best Customer Service (2015) and Brokerage
of the Year – Silver (2017, 2020). A former professor at the University of Guelph, Doug taught marketing, consumer behaviour, and entrepreneurship, founding the university’s Entrepreneurship 4100 course. Beyond the Deal: Real Talk on Diversity, Inclusion & Opportunity
Get ready for a powerful, unfiltered conversation about equity in the mortgage and real estate industry. This fireside chat will explore real
stories, uncover hidden barriers, and highlight the positive shifts already in motion. You'll leave with actionable insights on how to be a true advocate, create more inclusive experiences, and unlock new opportunities — because building a better
industry isn't just good for people, it's good for business.
In Canada’s mortgage industry, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) aren’t just buzzwords—they’re business essentials. As mortgage brokers, we serve
one of the most diverse populations in the world. Our clients come from different backgrounds, cultures, and financial situations, and they deserve professionals who understand their unique needs.
A commitment to DEI means building a team
that reflects the communities we serve, ensuring every client—regardless of their race, gender, age, or ability—feels understood and empowered in their homeownership journey. It’s about breaking down barriers to financing, advocating
for fair lending practices, and educating lenders on the realities faced by underrepresented groups.
Beyond ethics, DEI is just smart business. Studies show diverse teams outperform their peers, bringing fresh perspectives, stronger problem-solving,
and deeper connections with clients. An inclusive industry fosters trust, drives innovation, and creates a competitive advantage for mortgage professionals who embrace it.
At the end of the day, homeownership is about belonging. By prioritizing
DEI in our industry, we’re not just closing deals—we’re opening doors for all Canadians to build wealth, stability, and a brighter future. Let’s make our industry as inclusive as the country we call home.
Meet Steven Boodoo, Lead Broker for The EDM Mortgage Group – Mortgage Architects. With over 15 years of financial services experience, including 11 years at TD Bank where he rose to become a top-performing Mortgage Specialist and member of TD’s

This year, you can find him on stage at the Alberta Mortgage Conference and the National Mortgage Conference, continuing his work to move DEI initiatives forward nationwide. Beyond mortgages, Steven is active in his community—supporting Edmonton’s

MCAN
Alternative Lending 101: The Broker’s Edge
48% of Canadian homebuyers used a mortgage broker in 2024—up 5% from 2023. Why? Because brokers unlock lending options banks won’t touch (or even admit exist). But if you don’t get alt lending, your clients won’t either.
And that means:
- • Missed deals (hello, unnecessary declines!)
• Lost commissions (why refer when you can keep the business?)
• Clients stuck in "bank-only" thinking (yawn—time to shake things up!)
Join Leanne Conroy (MCAN’s Director of Sales) for a 45-minute power session that’ll help you:
- • Flip declines into approvals (and doubts into "where do I sign?")
• Debunk alt-lending myths (spoiler: it’s not just for "risky" clients)
• Turn YOU into the go-to broker (the one clients rave about)
The future of lending isn’t at the bank—it’s with YOU. Let’s make sure clients (and your business) don’t miss out.
Alt lending = Your unfair advantage. Time to use it.
Leanne Conroy is an expert in the alternative lending sector, having garnered numerous awards for her work. She has dedicated 20 years to the mortgage industry, with
ten of those years focused on alternative lending. Leanne is a sought-after source for market trend analysis, training, and education within the industry. Leanne is an ardent advocate for women in the mortgage industry, actively working to promote
gender diversity and empowerment. Her efforts to create an inclusive environment extend to her personal life, where she champions a balanced approach to work, life, and well-being. As a yoga instructor, Leanne offered free online classes during the
pandemic and remains committed to her community by volunteering with organizations like the YMCA. Leanne is Regional Director of Sales at MCAN Home.
